Former West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand was pleased with the win over Tottenham for one key reason.

A late Callum Wilson goal sealed a huge win for West Ham United, who pulled within five points of Nottingham Forest and Premier League safety.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side showed an awful lot of character. They may not fully convince just yet but to win it late after letting a lead slip was impressive.

On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you of West Ham staying up after they beat Spurs?

Indeed, West Ham’s win over Tottenham raised fresh hope of survival. The new signings impressed and while a lack of clean sheets is a worry, it showed there was something to work with.

Ferdinand was particularly impressed with their resilience.

It should also be mentioned that Nuno’s side produced a fine attacking display in the first half and more than deserved their 1-0 lead at the break, even if there was an element of fortune to Crysenscio Summerville’s goal.

In a scrap, however, fans want to see their team fighting. The Wolves game was a nadir on that front and the response to it has been excellent.

Ferdinand took to social media platform X to praise the team’s character.

He wrote: “The first half today is the best I’ve seen us play this season. It wasn’t so much the passing even though it was good, it was more the fight and passion coming out on top in 50/50’s and second balls, that’s what we love to see as West Ham fans & we always love a stoppage time goal.”

Pretend you call the shots – what are you doing over Callum Wilson’s future?

Nuno loved what he saw West Ham United do against Tottenham

It wasn’t just Ferdinand who was talking up West Ham’s ability to dig deep.

For the second week in a row, this team found a way. They may not be perfect, but the lack of fight that was so painfully evident against Wolves does appear to have been addressed.

That willingness to dig deep at least provides a platform upon which to build. West Ham, on this evidence, are not going to go without a fight.

Quite whether that’s enough to keep them in the Premier League is up for debate.

Still, Nuno is pleased with how his West Ham team are battling right now.

After the game, he said: “The players were resilient, they showed character and belief to keep the ball from going in the net.”
