West Ham cut the gap to safety to just two points for 24 hours at least by beating Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were excellent as West Ham made light work of Sunderland to claim consecutive Premier League victories.

Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes scored the goals as the Hammers made up ground on Nottingham Forest, who currently sit just above the relegation zone in the Premier League table.

Safety is in sight 😍 Who was your MOTM?!

For most of Saturday’s game against the Black Cats, West Ham were excellent.

That Fernandes goal will live long in the memory and the fine strike was enough to seal the game, even if Brian Brobbey’s header threatened to make things slightly nervy.

It was Summerville, however, who kicked things off by nodding in a Bowen cross.

The header was so good, in fact, that pundit Alan Shearer said he’d have been proud of it.

Describe this goal in just one word 🔥

I’ll start: ‘rocket’

Alan Shearer hails Crysencio Summerville’s goal against Sunderland

Shearer, the finest goalscorer in Premier League history, was much better-known for his ability to head the ball than Summerville.

The Dutchman, however, showed another side to his game by connecting with Bowen’s brilliant cross in emphatic fashion.

That kicked off West Ham’s 3-1 win over Sunderland and, watching on for BBC Sport, Shearer said: “That leap from Summerville [for West Ham’s opener] was amazing, I’d have been proud of that one.”

Crysencio Summerville reacts to Nuno demand at West Ham

That’s now three goals in three games for the former Leeds winger, who hadn’t scored since October 2024 before he netted against QPR in the FA Cup earlier this month.

He’s now in the best form since he joined the Irons from Leeds and that is particularly interesting following what his manager recently said.

Indeed, Nuno said he expected more from Summerville and demanded that he improve, along with his teammates.

It would be fair to say that Summerville has responded to that. That was a brilliant goal, and his general play was equally as impressive.

If West Ham are going to stay up, Summerville will play a big part.
