Gary Neville was critical of the way in which West Ham United approached tonight’s game against Manchester United, when speaking on Sky Sports Super Sunday (March 14th, 8:33 pm).

The Hammers went out with a whimper at Old Trafford tonight.

David Moyes set his team up to sit back and defend against Man United.

We didn’t lay a glove on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side tonight. And what a shame that is considering the chance we have to finish inside the top four this season.

It’s hard to be too critical of David Moyes. He has worked wonders since taking over at the London Stadium for the second time.

The Scot’s Achilles heel is certainly the way in which he approaches games against teams inside the top four, however. It seems as though he sets up to play against their historical reputation rather than the team in front of him.

What made it even more infuriating for the West Ham fans today was how much better we looked when we actually went for the game having introduced Said Benrahma and Manuel Lanzini.

Neville was baffled by the way in which the Hammers instantly changed their approach after going a goal down:

“You sit back, concede a goal and all of a sudden you go high press. It’s just absolutely crazy from West Ham really.”

Neville is spot on here.

The way in which Moyes set his team up to play really was infuriating. We probably won’t ever have a better chance to finish inside the top four than we do this season.

Let’s just hope that tonight’s weak effort doesn’t end up costing us down the line.
