VAR shocker for West Ham ahead of Wolves clash

West Ham United have been handed a VAR shocker ahead of our Premier League clash with Wolves on Saturday evening.

The Premier League have released the officials for all of the games on Matchweek nine, and West Ham have had a stinker.

David Moyes’s side have been on the wrong end of some really shocking decisions so far this season – notably when our late equaliser away at Chelsea earlier this month was unfairly ruled out.

They say that these things even themselves out but do they really? I’m not so sure.

It seems to me like the so called bigger clubs get the decisions in their favour time and time again.

And the latest Premier League announcement regarding the officials for the game at the London Stadium on Saturday will hardly fill the Hammers fans with confidence…

VAR official announced for West Ham vs Wolves

Peter Bankes will be the lead official on VAR at the London Stadium this weekend, as confirmed by the Premier League’s official website.

West Ham have some history with Bankes.

He was in charge during our home defeat to Brentford last season and put in one of the worst performances ever witnessed by a referee at the London Stadium.

Bankes also incorrectly awarded Tottenham a penalty during our 1-1 draw earlier this season, only for it to be overturned by VAR.

The Premier League referee was on VAR when Fabian Balbuena was handed a ludicrous red card during our home match against Chelsea a couple of years ago.

In addition to all of that, Bankes was on VAR when Anthony Taylor awarded Arsenal a penalty at the Emirates last season.

Vladimir Coufal was adjudged to have brought down Alexandre Lacazette inside the penalty area, but he clearly won the ball. And rather than intervene, Bankes just let it go.

That’s a lot of history involving Bankes and the Hammers and in my opinion, he shouldn’t be anywhere near any of our games for the foreseeable future.

Such is life though. Peter Bankes will be on VAR duty for the West Ham vs Wolves clash on Saturday. Let’s hope that we’re not talking about him and VAR after the game rather than a Hammers win!
