Didier Deschamps deals crushing blow to West Ham duo Sebastien Haller and Issa Diop's Euro 2020 dreams

France boss Didier Deschamps appears to have dealt a crushing blow to West Ham United duo Sebastien Haller and Issa Diop’s Euro 2020 hopes.

Just two months ago both Haller and Diop, West Ham’s record signings for a striker and defender respectively, were being tipped to earn a call-up from Deschamps.

West Ham were riding high at the start of the season.

But no wins in seven has seen the Hammers plummet from third to 16th in the Premier League.

And along with it any chance of £45million man Haller and his compatriot Diop being selected for the France squad anytime soon.

The West Ham duo have talked publicly about their dreams to make the step up to the senior French side and win a place in the squad for Euro 2020 (Daily Star and

Both have been ignored by Deschamps thus far this season. And any momentum the pair were building for selection has been extinguished by comments from the World Cup-winning manager.

Speaking to the French media this week after wins over Moldova and Albania during the international break, Deschamps outlined his future plans for the squad ahead of Euro 2020.

And West Ham stars Haller and Diop – who played in the France Under 21 side together – did not even get a mention.

Deschamps has no room for Haller or Diop

“Kurt Zouma (Chelsea) has inherited the fourth centre back spot from Adil Rami – DD (Deschamps) sticking with him despite uneven form,” Deschamps told the press as reported by Get French Football News.

“Attack is least predictable going into 2020: Wissam Ben Yedder has failed to take his chance in the last two months, Kingsley Coman constantly injured, Anthony Martial, Alexandre Lacazette, Moussa Dembele and maybe even Ousmane Dembele waiting in the wings.

“Olivier Giroud (so long as he moves in January), Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann dead certs. Thomas Lemar and Nabil Fekir under threat from Florian Thauvin and Houssem Aouar in 2020 and the others above. Don’t count Alassane Plea out either – DD (Deschamps) a big fan.

“Outside bets? A Samuel Umtiti redemption story, Presnel Kimpembe going off the boil, Abdou Diallo (PSG) coming out of nowhere, Matteo Guendouzi taking advantage of midfield injuries. But generally-speaking, Euro 2020 squad will be 2018 World Cup winners plus or minus a few.”

Only one way to change his mind, playing well for West Ham

Even the most ardent West Ham fan would struggle to argue the case for either player for a France call-up.

Haller has become an increasingly isolated and frustrated figure up front for West Ham. He is a victim of Manuel Pellegrini’s tactics and team selection but also of the West Ham board’s failure to sign an adequate partner and back-up.

Diop has been one of West Ham’s better players this season but is still miles off the sort of form Hammers supporters know he is capable of producing. Indeed the kind of form which saw him linked with an £75million move to Manchester United during the summer (Telegraph).

Of course there is one way to change Deschamps’ mind. Have the season of your life for West Ham and force your way in.
