Areola’s position as West Ham United’s number two goalkeeper has been the subject of fervent debate both last season and this.
The 29-year-old spent last season on loan with the Hammers from Paris Saint-Germain but was limited to a bench role in the Premier League.
And despite making the move permanent in the summer for a bargain £10m, nothing has changed in that respect this term with Lukasz Fabianski still Moyes’ number one.
Fabianski has been a superb servant for West Ham and one of the club’s best goalkeepers of the modern era.
The Polish stopper has not made any horrendous, glaring errors for the Hammers.
But some feel his reactions and distribution – both in terms of quality and distance – are not on the same level as Areola’s.
Moyes clearly plans for Areola to succeed Fabianski and be West Ham’s number one for the next five or six years.
Many feel that transition needs to be made now, though, with growing calls for the 6ft 5in French international to be West Ham’s number one.
Areola has had to make do with playing in the European games this season and last with Moyes sticking by Fabianski.
And that has had big consequences for the Hammers man today.
Moyes has cost West Ham star Areola a huge chance after a Deschamps announcement this evening.
David Moyes costs West Ham star Alphonse Areola a huge chance after Didier Deschamps announcement
With Tottenham star Hugo Lloris injured, all eyes in France – and some at West Ham – were on who Deschamps would pick to replace him for the Nations League game against Austria on Thursday night.
It was between Areola and AC Milan ‘keeper Mike Maignan.
And Deschamps has made it clear he sees Maignan, who is Milan’s number first choice goalkeeper, as his number two ahead of the World Cup by selecting him to start against former Hammer Marko Arnautovic.
There is a huge difference between a number two or number three goalkeeper for the national side at a major tournament.
If you are the latter then you more or less no that, barring a freak sequence of events or injuries, you won’t be getting a look-in.
Had Moyes instated Areola as West Ham’s number one, as many feel he should have done by now, then it would certainly have given Deschamps a tough decision with Areola widely regarded, both here and in France, as a better goalkeeper.
