Sam Allardyce dropped Alex Song for the visit of Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Although people were shocked by the surprise decision, Alex Song also didn’t start against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge so there might have been something behind both decisions.
I believe that dropping Alex Song was the correct decision as Kevin Nolan came in and performed brilliantly, the best I’ve seen him play this season in fact. Noble played more Centre Defensive Midfield role, but Nolan dropped back several times when needed to.
Some may say that Alex Song had a “knee injury” but I don’t believe that one bit, unless he just suddenly uses that as an excuses for when he doesn’t play. Admittedly, he hasn’t travelled to Dubai with the squad, but that may be for personal reasons, like “doesn’t wish to spend a week in Dubai with the players”.
I’m not trying to hate on Alex Song, but his performances as of late have been near to atrocious and Arsenal fans did warn us that this would happen during this stage of the season unfortunately. Dropping him for the visit of Chelsea sure did have its advantages, but for the trip to the Emirates Stadium, Song needs to drop back into the squad. Arsenal have very quick, attack-minded and dangerous in possession players, so we will need to be very good in the defensive department – Nolan doesn’t possess that attribute away from home I’m afraid, especially against much quicker players than him.
Do you believe Song being dropped for the Chelsea match was the best decision? Do you feel like we missed him?
