Official West Ham team news update ahead of Lyon offers hope over major doubt Ben Johnson

An official West Ham team news update ahead of the Europa League clash with Lyon offers hope over major doubt Ben Johnson.

The massive Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon is now just over 24 hours away at the London Stadium.

West Ham warmed up for the match with a 2-1 win over Everton.

But David Moyes had to make do without one of his best performers when he revealed Ben Johnson missed the game after ‘feeling his hamstring’ on England Under 21 duty and again in training before the Toffees clash.

A West Ham insider told Claret and Hugh that Johnson was likely to miss the Lyon match as a result.

The insider said West Ham and Johnson had been dealt the cruel blow and that Vladimir Coufal was waiting in the wings as his potential replacement.

Johnson has been superb for West Ham this season and really established himself as a key player.

Moyes needs all his top players fit for such a big game. And he is already missing Manuel Lanzini through suspension.

While Coufal has been brilliant for West Ham, it could be a big ask to throw him back into such an intense and important match after a prolonged spell out following his hernia operation.

Well there could be good news for Moyes the Hammers.

Because an official West Ham team news update ahead of Lyon offers hope over major doubt Johnson.

In a team news update on the club’s official website before welcoming Lyon to east London, West Ham say there is ‘hope’ Johnson will be available.

“West Ham United will be without Manuel Lanzini after the Argentina international was shown his third yellow card of the Europa League campaign in the round of 16 second-leg win over Sevilla,” West Ham said on the club’s official website.

“David Moyes will also be without Angelo Ogbonna (knee), but will hope Ben Johnson has recovered from the knock which caused him to miss Sunday’s Premier League win over Everton.

“Olympique Lyonnais have nobody suspended, but captain and right-back Léo Dubois and centre-backs Jérôme Boateng and Castello Jr are all one booking away from missing the second leg.”

It would be a massive boost if Johnson is declared fit.

Ryan Fredericks did well filling in against Everton but was worryingly caught out of position a number of times and his pace got him out of trouble.

Johnson has also performed well in the Europa League this season and was crucial in helping West Ham subdue Sevilla in the last 16 clash.
