West Ham U23 pair Iyiola Adebayo and Reece Hannam have both picked up injuries from Tuesday night. Adebayo and Hannam both had to be replaced during the 4-3 loss against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy.
Dmitri Halajko – the Hammers academy coach – told the club’s official website that his two defenders have suffered “quite bad” injuries. Adebayo and Hannam started the match together in central defence but were both replaced.
Adebayo and Hannam injured
Hannam is naturally a left-back but he played in central defence for a depleted West Ham back-line. However, 32 minutes into the game, the 19-year-old was forced off. Sam Caiger moved to centre-back with replacement Keenan Appiah-Forson playing at right-back.
Adebayo is a first-year scholar who was making his first start at this age group level. But the 17-year-old’s evening was cut short on 78 minutes. Following a lengthy stoppage, Adebayo was stretchered off the field and replaced by striker Louie Watson with West Ham searching for an equaliser.
West Ham U23s with defensive crisis
West Ham’s defensive options in the U23 team have been depleted by injuries, loans and internationals. Goncalo Cardoso and Jamal Baptiste have featured together recently but they are representing Portugal U19 and England U17 respectively.
Meanwhile, Aji Alese is out on loan and Harrison Ashby is playing for Scotland’s U19 team. With Hannam and Adebayo also picking up injuries, Halajko has some tough decisions to make for future games.
