West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell has trained ahead of the Southampton trip.
Cresswell limped off last Monday in the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal. He was replaced by Arthur Masuaku and there were concerns over Cresswell’s fitness for the upcoming weekend match.
West Ham travel to relegation rivals Southampton for the late kick-off on Saturday. It looks like Cresswell will be available. Manuel Pellegrini did not mention the occasional England left-back when he gave an injury update. And he is training with his team-mates in the official photographs.
Cresswell or Masuaku?
Throughout his time as West Ham manager, Pellegrini has not been able to decide who his best left-back is. There are pros and cons to both players. But bizarrely, they have both been rewarded with long-term deals.
Cresswell has been the top choice lately, ever since Masuaku was sent off against Aston Villa in September. With three goals to his name, Cresswell’s attacking has arguably kept him in the team.
But Masuaku’s defensive frailties were once again exposed on Monday night. It was 1-0 to the Hammers when Cresswell went off. While Masuaku was not to blame for the first goal, he was weak for Arsenal’s second and third goals as the Irons imploded.
Pellegrini seems to trust Cresswell a bit more – especially when it comes to defending. It is not the ideal situation but Cresswell should probably get the nod if he is fully fit for the Southampton match.
