Newport County await West Ham in the Second Round of the EFL Cup. After the First Round fixtures, the EFL Cup Second Round draw took place at Salford City’s stadium.

West Ham were ball number nine and have been given an away fixture against Newport. The Exiles beat Gillingham on penalties to progress and have a knack of cup upsets.

Last season, Newport shocked Leicester City at Rodney Parade. Padraig Amond’s late penalty (won by then-Hammer Vashon Neufville) sent Newport through at Leicester’s expense.

The Welsh side also gave Manchester City a good run for their money. This, coupled with West Ham’s vulnerability against weaker sides, has got many Hammers fans worried.

Gillingham faced Newport in a game of penalties. Brandon Hanlan put the Gills ahead from the spot but then missed the chance to make it 2-0 with another penalty later in the game.

On 84 minutes, ex-Leyton Orient striker Tristan Abrahams equalised but Mikael Ndjoli scored a 90th-minute penalty to surely win it for Gillingham. However, the finale was quite dramatic.

Ndjoli went from hero to zero as he then conceded an injury-time penalty and received a red card for the challenge. Amond made no mistake from the spot to level things at 2-2 and Newport won on penalties.
