Hell hath no fury like a West Ham United fan scorned.

And Manchester United star Jesse Lingard found that out when West Ham visited Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

West Ham fans were desperate to see Lingard sign for them in the summer after his sensational loan spell at the London Stadium last season.

But the player elected to remain at Man United.

Travelling West Ham fans do Hammers proud at Old Trafford

And didn’t West Ham know it on Sunday when Lingard drove a dagger through their hearts by scoring a last minute winner in the Red Devils’s 2-1 triumph in east London.

West Ham fans had given Lingard a rapturous reception on his return.

And he showed them respect by refusing to celebrate – an action that was arrogantly and incorrectly misconstrued as an apology to Man United fans for his error which cost them dear in the Champions League last week.

West Ham fans are famed for their sharp wit.

Scorned West Ham fans taunt Lingard with Bowen chant

That was on display again at Old Trafford as they taunted Lingard with a lengthy chant of “You’re just a s–t Jarrod Bowen” aimed at the 28-year-old throughout West Ham’s vengeful 1-0 win.

Mark Noble’s name also rang out from the away end as West Ham fans threw their support behind the skipper following his 93rd minute penalty miss three days ago.

Noble was predictably taunted by the Man United fans with his every touch jeered for a while. But it only served to drive Noble on as he rolled back the years with a tigerish display and went so close to sealing it at the death.

Mark’s Noble response to Man United jeers

Nobes did find himself involved in more penalty drama as he briefly grabbed the shirt of Lingard in the box.

Referee Jon Moss ignored appeals for a penalty. Although replays suggested had VAR been in use during the third round it may well have been awarded.

Some justice then for the ridiculous decision not to award Tomas Soucek a spot kick in the league game.

Never change West Ham fans. Never change.
