Grady Diangana’s two-goal display and outstanding performance level may have caught some West Ham fans by surprise against Macclesfield on Wednesday night.

The starlet’s debut went better than he could have dreamed of beforehand, but Manuel Pellegrini says that he was not shocked by it.

The former Manchester City boss showed the immense faith he has in the player by stating his matchday display was just a continuation of how he trains.

In his own words

Pellegrini told the club’s official website: “I think that Diangana played exactly the way he worked in the week. That’s why he started the game, because he was working very well with us.

“Maybe some players, when they have the opportunity, they don’t have the personality to do what they want to do but I think he did very well from the first minute.

“I spoke with him before the game and told him that I want to see the same player that I see working during the week. He has a lot of talent, not only for the two goals that he scored, because he didn’t lose the ball, he was playing deep balls.

“He’s a young player who had the personality to play the same way he plays on the training ground.”

High praise

There are two very promising signs in Pellegrini’s comments; for both Diangana and the fans.

First, a player who is able to take his form from the relaxed training environment into a game is a hugely valuable asset. Even senior pros struggle with that; so it’s an extremely good trait to have.

Secondly, Pellegrini is clearly a fan. It shines through in everything he said. That means Diangana can expect more games and the fans should get more chances to see one of their own out there on the pitch.
