West Ham defender Ben Johnson played in central defence as the U23 team recorded back-to-back wins. West Ham’s U23s are hoping to earn promotion back to the Premier League 2 and Johnson played a crucial role in another win.
The young Hammers beat Newcastle United after coming from behind. Jamie Sterry’s early goal was cancelled out by Joe Powell before a late own goal won it for the Irons.
Johnson – who is naturally a right-back – showcased his ability to perform at centre-half. Having already played at left-back for the senior side, West Ham are blessed with a naturally-gifted and complete defender.
Ben Johnson: Breakout season?

Last season, Johnson was thrown in at the deep end by making his league debut against Manchester City at The Etihad Stadium. Injuries to Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku pushed Johnson into the starting line-up out of nowhere.
Naturally a right-back, the youngster started at left-back against Man City’s rampant attack. For more than 60 minutes, he held his own before coming off with a calf injury. He has not played since.
Johnson’s successful debut can be measured against the opening day of this season. The 19-year-old, who became West Ham’s first 2000s-born player, helped to keep Man City to just one goal (a penalty) compared to the 5-0 thrashing in the opening game this season.
The talented teenager has now shown that he can play anywhere across the back four. As he develops, this could become vital, especially with West Ham’s leaky defence. After featuring heavily in pre-season, it is clear that Manuel Pellegrini rates him highly.
If Johnson continues to impress with his versatility and solid performances in the U23 side, a first-team return is surely around the corner. This could be a big season for Johnson.
