Adrian left West Ham in the summer so the club were on the lookout for a new goalkeeper.
Nathan Trott needed a loan spell and Joseph Anang stayed in the academy team. So, West Ham needed a new back-up goalkeeper to provide competition and cover for Lukasz Fabianski.
One option was Bartlomiej Dragowski. According to Tutto Mercato Web, West Ham were scouting Dragowski, who was on loan at Empoli from Fiorentina. He was a potential addition as a second-choice goalkeeper.
Instead, though, West Ham opted to sign Roberto and David Martin. Rather than invest in a decent goalkeeper for the future, David Sullivan’s decision to get a buy-one-get-one-free deal on 33-year-old free agent goalkeepers has unsurprisingly backfired.
Roberto woes continue

West Ham fans had their doubts about Roberto when he looked a bit error-prone in pre-season. This was largely brushed aside. It’s only pre-season and, anyway, he’ll never be playing with Fabianski in goal.
Fast-forward a few months and Fabianski’s injury has seen West Ham plummet from European contenders to relegation fodder. Roberto has played a central role in the Irons’ demise with the low-point coming when he punched the ball into his own net against Burnley.
After conceding 15 goals in his last six starts, Roberto could be sold by West Ham in January (according to The Mirror). West Ham did not learn their lessons and will pay for it in January.
Dragowski: Long-term successor for Fabianski?

Because West Ham were bargain-hunting in the summer, it means the blueprint has to be ripped up. West Ham should have solved their goalkeeper problem in the summer by signing Dragowski but the next best step is to try to sign him again in January.
Dragowski is a very promising young goalkeeper who fits the bill perfectly for West Ham. Fabianski will be 35 by the end of the season so he is approaching his final few years. Dragowski, 22, could be the long-term successor for club and country.
The Poland international has proven his worth in the Italian top-flight and he is young. Once Fabianski retires, West Ham’s goalkeeper department will be in safe hands with Dragowski competing with Trott for starts.
