West Ham should consider cashing in on Chicharito this January

According to The Express, Javier Hernandez could seek a January exit to get regular playing time elsewhere.

Hernandez is usually a substitute at West Ham and he could move away in the new year with Besiktas interested.

Although the diminutive forward does know where the net is, West Ham need to consider selling him now. Here are some reasons why.

Sell-on value

The 30-year-old is entering the final stages of his career and his value is going downwards.

West Ham shelled £16m on Hernandez in summer 2017 and they are unlikely to recoup that sum of money.

But selling him in January gets his hefty wages off the books and he would drop in value between January and the summer.

From a business point of view, it might be worth cashing in on Hernandez and investing in a young striker instead.

Style of play

Hernandez is very effective at what he does – there is no doubting that.

If the ball bounces to the Mexican in the box, you expect him to pounce on it and tuck it in the net.

But unfortunately, he does not suit Manuel Pellegrini’s style of play.

With just one lone striker in Pellegrini’s preferred 4-3-3 system, West Ham need Hernandez to offer more physicality, hold-up play and the ability to drop in and receive the ball.

Marko Arnautovic does this expertly so Chicharito has little chance of jumping above the Austrian in the pecking order.

Hernandez’s benefit

The Mexico international is coming towards the end of his playing career and he will want game time.

West Ham cannot offer him a regular role in the side unless Arnautovic suffers an injury.

So allowing him to move away to finish his career with a flourish would be the kind thing to do.
