Reported West Ham target Maxi Gomez scored against Barcelona to add to his burgeoning reputation. West Ham fans might get excited by the prospect of signing the Celta Vigo hitman, who eased Celta Vigo’s relegation woes with their win.

But this might not be good news for West Ham. With Barcelona also sniffing around, they had a chance to scout him firsthand. And after he found the net against the Spanish giants, this could lead to a summer bid.

Back in January, West Ham identified the 22-year-old as the ideal replacement for China-linked Marko Arnautovic. The Hammers were reportedly keen to trigger his £43.5m release clause, according to The Guardian.

But this move failed to materialise after Arnautovic decided to stay. Still, rumours have persisted suggesting West Ham will launch a summer bid for the Uruguay international.

Gomez has scored 13 goals in 33 La Liga matches this season for lowly Celta Vigo. And this form has not gone unnoticed with other clubs circling.

Tottenham Hotspur are also in the hunt (The Daily Mail). But crucially, Barcelona have also been linked with a swoop, as per Mundo Deportivo.

After Gomez netted against Barcelona, he could find himself firmly on Barcelona’s radar. If the La Liga champions swoop, West Ham’s hopes of signing Gomez will surely be over.
