West Ham United made a brilliant decision to sell one player in particular last summer as far as I’m concerned.

David Moyes made some truly horrific signings for West Ham during his tenure at the London Stadium – ones that Julen Lopetegui is still paying for now.

Lopetegui has already moved on the majority of the flops Moyes brought in, but many of them have just left on loan deals.

However, there was one sale the Hammers made last summer that Moyes deserves big credit for.

The Scot is a very stubborn man, so selling someone on the cheap who he convinced the board to pay such a large amount of money for was a big thing for him to do.

That decision to sell the player in question now looks like an absolutely brilliant move from Moyes and the Hammers owners

West Ham hit the jackpot by selling Nikola Vlasic

The Hammers sold Nikola Vlasic to Italian side Torino in the 2023 summer transfer window for around £8 million (6 foot 2).

That came after he spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan with the Serie A outfit, where he bagged five goals and six assists in 34 league games.

After the Croatian joined Torino, his agent came out and suggested that his client never felt the love he needed at the London Stadium.

However, since the 26-year-old made his move to Torino a permanent one in the summer of 2023, he has bagged just three goals and two assists in 35 games – a really poor return for a forward.

Midway through last season, it was claimed in the Italian media that there were big concerns at Torino about Vlasic’s poor form.

In my opinion, West Ham quite clearly made the correct decision to sell him.

The Hammers agreed a fee with CSKA Moscow in excess of £30 million for the 26-year-old back in 2021.

However, we didn’t end up paying anything like that for him, after Russia invaded Ukraine, and the fall-out from that (The Guardian).

Selling Nikola Vlasic for £8 million was a masterstroke from West Ham, although it might not have looked like it at the time.
