West Ham fans should be very concerned after ‘summer transfer window priority’ update emerges

West Ham United face an incredibly important summer transfer window lying ahead.

Graham Potter will be under no illusions at all regarding the size of the task lying in front of him at West Ham.

The 49-year-old took over at the London Stadium in January, but progress has been slower than was first expected.

Potter is keen to overhaul his West Ham squad in the summer window, and that is very much needed.

The Hammers are crying out for more youth, athleticism, dynamism, power and pace.

The good news is that Potter is looking to add all of those attributes to his ranks.

However, there is one position at the London Stadium that is seemingly being very much overlooked…

West Ham fans should be very worried by Alphonse Areola update

Alphonse Areola is the Hammers’ number one goalkeeper.

The 32-year-old is a fantastic shot-stopper, but he certainly has his faults.

Alphonse Areola actually impressed for West Ham during the early days of Potter’s tenure. However, he is still very much a weak-link in the team.

His ability to come for crosses, or lack thereof, puts his defenders under the cosh when facing corners and free-kicks.

The Frenchman is very uncomfortable with the ball at his feet as well, and his distribution leaves a lot to be desired.

With that in mind, Claret and Hugh’s claim that replacing Areola is ‘not a priority’ should really worry the West Ham fans.

In order for Potter’s system to work, he needs a confident goalkeeper who excels with the ball at his feet, and Areola certainly doesn’t fit into that category.

Graham Potter on the verge of major Areola mistake

The 32-year-old goalkeeper showed his weaknesses during the Hammers’ 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend.

He simply isn’t good enough to play in a possession-based system, and if Graham Potter decides not to replace him this summer, West Ham fans can expect more disappointment next season.

It’s fair to argue that the goalkeeping position is actually one of the departments at the London Stadium in most urgent need of attention.

Lukasz Fabianski should leave West Ham this summer, and Alphonse Areola should follow him out the door.

However, it seems like Potter and the Hammers owners have a slightly different view on things.
