West Ham fans react on Twitter to Richard Keys’ comments

When writing for his regular blog yesterday, Richard Keys took aim at the West Ham owners, and some Hammers fans took to Twitter in reaction to his comments.

The Hammers are currently embroiled in a real relegation battle. They are sitting in 18th spot in the Premier League table, one point adrift of safety.

And things are set to get even tougher for the east London outfit.

West Ham face clashes with Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Wolves, Tottenham and Chelsea in their next six games.

So relegation down to the Championship is a very real possibility.

And the Hammers fans are pointing the finger of blame squarely at David Sullivan and David Gold.

The board must do more…

Despite recent claims suggesting that the duo have invested heavily in West Ham, there simply just hasn’t been enough money made available to David Moyes and Manuel Pellegrini and Slaven Bilic before him.

Since the start of the summer of 2017, the Hammers have spent roughly £238 million on incoming players (Transfermarkt).

However, they have also received around £124 million from player sales during that same period, as well as releasing the likes of Andy Carroll, Adrian and Samir Nasri (Transfermarkt).

And Keys didn’t hold back in his criticism of the Hammers board, when writing his regular blog yesterday:

“I’ve made myself very unpopular with West Ham fans down the years. The trio that run your club have let you all down. It’s a mess. How David Gold has got the brass neck to ‘like’ a tweet referring to West Ham fans as ‘morons’ I don’t know. Hang your head in shame David. Here’s my take. West Ham is a wonderful football club with glorious traditions trashed in the modern era. Having said that, I also believe that a lot of Hammers fans have an unrealistic view of what their club can achieve – perhaps fuelled by the current owners. West Ham are NOT going to play Champions League football any time soon. West Ham should hope to finish in the top half and enjoy the occasional Cup run – just like it always was. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

And Keys is spot on. The club is a mess. It’s very hard to be positive about anything at the moment. Who knows, perhaps a few good results will change that. But as things stand, it’s vital for everyone involved with the club to fully understand the severity of the situation.

The only thing that Hammers fans will not agree with is his comments suggesting that they should just be happy with a top 10 finish. Why should they? Look at teams like Leicester and how they have achieved great things over the past few years.
