West Ham duo are the only ones who can save David Moyes from potential Amadou Onana embarrassment at Everton.

Moyes returns to his old club Everton who are conversely managed by former West Ham man Frank Lampard.

It adds a touch more spice to an already important Premier League clash.

But it will be the heart of midfield which holds the key to everything at Goodison Park.

As West Ham fans know only too well, Everton came in at the 11th hour to beat the Hammers to the £33m signing of Amadou Onana.

The giant Belgian midfielder looked all set to sign for West Ham who had a bid accepted at the fourth time of asking.

But Lampard and Everton came in, offered Onana a greater guarantee of a starting spot and Moyes allegedly pulled the plug on the move.

Moyes admitted ahead of the game that West Ham liked Onana and he thought the deal was close to being done at one stage only for Lampard to swoop.

Onana has already showed signs of being a Premier League revelation with the Toffees much to the chagrin of West Ham fans who felt the club needed a more mobile, dominant, box-to-box central midfield partner for Declan Rice if they were to maintain their top six challenge this season.

That was against the backdrop of Tomas Soucek’s desperately poor form over the last year.

There have been signs that Soucek is getting back to something like his old self alongside Rice in the West Ham midfield.

And the West Ham duo are the only ones who can save Moyes from potential Onana embarrassment at Everton.

If the 20-year-old Toffees star has a blinder against West Ham it will leave Moyes with egg on his face over the decision not to give Onana the guarantees he wanted over game time.

The Hammers ended up signing Brazil star Lucas Paqueta from Lyon for a club record fee. And overall the club did some fantastic summer business.

But Paqueta and Onana are completely different players in different positions so it cannot be argued that the Brazilian was signed instead of the Belgian.

Rice and Soucek must dominate Onana at Goodison Park and prove that Moyes made the right call.

If they do then West Ham will likely win the game, so key is that central midfield battle to the outcome of this contest.
