West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini addressed the media after his side’s disappointing 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, and seemed to avoid a question regarding Roberto’s ability, as quoted by Football.London.

The experienced Spaniard joined the Hammers on a free transfer in the summer. He arrived as Lukasz Fabianski’s backup.

The 33-year-old has been thrown into the limelight, however, for the past four games, after the Pole suffered an injury against Bournemouth.

And Roberto has received heavy criticism from the West Ham fans.

He has looked shaky between the posts, and has already made a number of high profile errors.

Pellegrini was asked whether the Spaniard is of Premier League quality after Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle.

And like a well-versed politician, he seemed to avoid the question, as quoted by Football.London:

“Roberto has a career behind him, with big teams in other countries. I do not think today is about him.”

West Ham fans will be desperate for Fabianski to return from injury. It is no coincidence that the Hammers have suffered during the Pole’s absence.

And the West Ham owners are now under real scrutiny, having not provided Pellegrini with the funds to buy a capable back-up goalkeeper for the former Swansea City and Arsenal man.
