West Ham asking for trouble with plan to sign star who has been a laughing stock at two Premier League clubs

After a week of refreshing links to some top young talent, there is a reminder that David Sullivan is back involved in West Ham’s transfers.

David Sullivan takes a lot of stick among the West Ham fanbase.

Much of it is legitimate, justified and self-inflicted for the Hammers’ majority owner.

But some of the criticism is occasionally a touch harsh from West Ham supporters.

A lot of the barbs aimed at Sullivan over his 15-year reign – besides the move to the London Stadium – revolves around transfers.

It must be remembered Sullivan has helped bring some brilliant players to West Ham over the years, many of them considered club legends and cult heroes.

West Ham can’t afford anymore transfer trauma

There have been some unbelievable talents signed in Sullivan’s tenure such as Dimitri Payet, Marko Arnautovic, Manuel Lanzini, Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and – on his form of last season – Mohammed Kudus.

Crysencio Summerville looks another top buy when back fit and Sullivan himself was directly responsible for doing that deal with Leeds last summer.

But for every Payet, there’s been a Nordtveit and for every Arnautovic, there’s been a Vlasic.

West Ham fans have been enthused by some of the targets being linked with the club this week.

The Hammers have delivered an exciting transfer update this weekend after four of the club’s oldest players were released.

Some top young talents are reportedly in the club’s sights as Graham Potter and head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay look to completely reinvent the team and drive down the age of the Premier League’s oldest squad.

Cynical West Ham fans will believe it when they see it.

Especially now Sullivan is back in ultimate control of transfers as West Ham’s de facto director of football.

Another issue the Hammers have is transfer reports linking the club with certain players.

Much of that may have little substance at times, yet it still draws criticism from supporters if they don’t like what they’re reading.

But West Ham asking for trouble with a plan to sign a star who has been a laughing stock at two Premier League clubs.

West Ham asking for trouble with plan to sign laughing stock

Signing at least one striker is an absolute must for West Ham this summer.

While it will be no great loss, Danny Ings is being released and Evan Ferguson’s loan will not be made permanent.

Potter has confirmed the situation regarding Michail Antonio too as a decision on a new deal for the 35-year-old is pending.

Given what Antonio has been through, there is no way West Ham can put the pressure of being a key starter on him next season even if he does stay. It simply wouldn’t be fair on Antonio as much as anything else.

If Antonio departs, it would leave Niclas Fullkrug – who is 33 next season and is injury-prone – as the club’s only striker.

So it’s likely two forwards will be needed.

West Ham ‘considering’ shock Werner move

And according to more than one report, West Ham are considering making Timo Werner one of them.

The likes of Give Me Sport and talkSPORT claim the Hammers have been alerted to Werner’s availability and desire to remain living in London.

Werner was linked with a move to the London Stadium last year.

At the time Hammers News revealed rivals Spurs did West Ham a huge favour by signing Werner instead.

One look at social media shows many West Ham fans are incredulous at the links to Werner.

The 29-year-old has become a joke figure during his time in English football, best known for missing sitters on a regular basis.

Werner was a big money signing for Chelsea from RB Leipzig in the 2020-21 season.

But in two years playing for a top Blues side, he managed just 23 goals in 90 games.

He returned to Leipzig where he fared a little better back in the less competitive Bundesliga.

Cynics would say Werner plan smacks of Sullivan – but let’s hope it’s hot air

But Spurs brought him back to the Premier League on loan last January and he managed just two goals in 14 appearances.

Tottenham could not decide whether to make the move permanent and instead negotiated another loan, this time with an £8.5m option to buy.

Werner has been even worse this season, though, putting up the most dismal figures of his career with a solitary goal in 27 games.

Tottenham have decided they don’t want to keep Werner – even for just £8.5m.

Yet here West Ham fans are being told they are considering bringing in the Spurs cast-off.

If there is any remote truth to the claims, then West Ham really don’t help themselves sometimes.

The Hammers can’t score goals under Potter.

So the last thing they need is someone more famous for that than most.
