West Ham ace Issa Diop spoke exclusively to the club’s official website, and insisted that he and his teammates are aiming for a top seven finish this season, as well as challenging for a cup.

The Hammers have made a decent start to their 2019/20 campaign. They have taken seven points from their opening four Premier League games, and a win tonight against Aston Villa would see them jump up to third in the Premier League table.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men are also through to the next stage of the Carabao Cup, having beaten Newport County away in the second round.

So all in all, the West Ham players and fans will be very happy.

And Diop explained how he and his teammates have their sights set very high this season, when speaking exclusively to the Hammers’ official website:

“Europe qualification has to be our target, it has to be and it is better to have high ambition than low ambition! We want to finish the season in the best-possible position and go far in a cup, if not win a cup. We have to have big ambition and we shouldn’t be scared of these targets. This helps to push you forward.”

Now, Diop’s comments are in stark contrast to those of his manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean told the Evening Standard earlier this season:

“I never start with a target before the start of the season. “

It is good to see players like Diop taking the initiative and setting targets, however. It is healthy to have ambition. And if every player at West Ham is on the same page of the Frenchman, they will have every chance of achieving a top seven finish this season.
