West Ham ace Jarrod Bowen sat down for an exclusive interview with the club’s official website, and explained why he sometimes needs to be selfish in order to succeed.

The 23-year-old joined the Hammers from Hull City on transfer deadline day in January for around £22 million (The Guardian).

And he has made an excellent start to life in east London.

Bowen made his full debut for West Ham last Saturday against Southampton. That was after being on the bench for the first two games that he was eligible for.

Bowen the difference maker

The former Hereford ace made a huge difference for the Hammers, what with his quality in the final third and incredible work-rate throughout the entire game.

Bowen attempted four shots on goal against the Saints (Football Critic), and some of them didn’t seem to be the wisest of decisions.

There was one instant when Pablo Fornals was wide open and could have been played in on goal, but Bowen chose to shoot instead.

But the 23-year-old told WHUFC.com how being selfish is sometimes a necessity, if you want to make a difference in a particular game:

“I enjoy scoring goals. I embrace it. Sometimes it’s about being in the right place at the right time, sometimes it’s about a little piece of skill that you do. Putting the ball in the back of the net is my job. You have to be a bit selfish. Sometimes it’s easier to pass the ball sideways or give it to someone else to do it. You might have three or four shots but even if only one goes in, it might be the goal that wins you the game or gets you back into the game. I’ll never have a fear of shooting!”

This really is a great attitude to have. West Ham need someone to be selfish up front. They need goals desperately, and perhaps Bowen will be the man who keeps them up this season.

And if that turns out to be the case, £22 million for the 23-year-old will seem like an absolute bargain.
