The first time West Ham ever met Chelsea in the Premier League was in 1993.

At Upton Park, newly promoted West Ham beat Chelsea 1-0, courtesy of a Trevor Morley strike.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash with the Blues, we look back at that memorable goal.

West Ham 1-0 Chelsea (Morley)

West Ham hosted Chelsea at Upton Park on 2nd October 1993 and claimed an impressive 1-0 victory.

Morley was the man to the goal. The striker struck shortly before half time and that was the only goal of the game.

The goal was memorable for both the build-up and the finishing touch.

With two minutes to go until the interval, Lee Chapman flicked it on to his strike partner Morley.

Morley nodded it back to Chapman first time, who fed left-winger Matty Holmes.

With the Chelsea defence stretched, Holmes sent an inside pass back to Morley again, who was given too much time outside the box and was invited to shoot.

The former Manchester City striker swivelled and hit a right-footed strike into the top corner from 25 yards.

Chelsea’s tracksuit-bottom-wearing goalkeeper Dimitri Kharine was helpless as the ball sailed into the back of the net to give West Ham a lead.

That goal would prove to be the only strike of the game.

Can we expect the same this weekend?

West Ham will be hoping for more inspiration like Morley’s this weekend.

Last season, Marko Arnautovic was the man to turn up and earn the Hammers a 1-0 win over Chelsea.

But with the Austrian a doubt for the game and Chelsea on red hot form, it will be tough for the Irons.
