West Ham are going through a really bad run at the moment.
After such a bright start to the season, they now sit in 16th spot in the Premier League table.
There are so many potential reasons for their recent run, but one area in particular that should have been strengthened in the summer is defensive midfield.
Declan Rice has been the Hammers’ best player this season, but he can’t do everything on his own.
The 20-year-old needs more competition for his position and an experienced helping hand in the middle of the park.
West Ham wanted to sign Gary Medel in the summer. Turkish website Fanatik claimed that the Hammers had all but agreed a deal to sign the 125-capped Chile international, but in the end that failed to materialise.
And whilst those links seemed to be rather uninspiring at the time, Manuel Pellegrini could really do with his countryman now.
Medel, 32, is an absolute warrior. His game is based around his ability to break up play, and his tenacity is exactly what the Hammers have been missing during their shocking recent run of form.
That ship has sailed now, however. Medel has linked up with Italian side Bologna.
Even so, Pellegrini still needs to look at adding some more fighting spirit to his squad in January.
The Chilean would have been ideal for West Ham, but the east London outfit now need to look elsewhere.
