Tony Cascarino highlighted West Ham’s defence as a major cause for concern for David Moyes, when speaking on talkSPORT’s Sunday Sports Breakfast show (Sunday, February 9th, 08:42).
The Hammers were tipped to challenge for the top seven at the start of the season. But their campaign has plunged into chaos and turmoil after making what was a very respectable start to the season.
David Moyes’s men were sitting as high as third in the Premier League table at one point, but they are now deeply entrenched in a relegation battle.
West Ham are now sitting in 18th spot in the table, one point adrift of safety.
And with trips to Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all to come in their next seven league games, things are looking bleak for the Hammers.
One massive problem for the east London outfit this season has been their defence. They have conceded 43 goals in 25 Premier League games – only three sides have let in more this season.
And Cascarino highlighted that particular weakness, when speaking on talkSPORT’s Sunday Sports Breakfast this morning:
“Fredericks, Ogbonna, Diop and Cresswell. All four of them give you chances. Their goals against column is horrendous. And I can’t see them stopping City today.”
Cascarino is spot on. It’s baffling that the Hammers failed to bolster their defensive options in January.
And if they fail to sort out their defensive woes between now and May, Championship football will surely beckon for West Ham.
There are question marks as to whether Diop, Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena are actually good enough. But the onus is on Moyes to improve them for now. He is a self-proclaimed coach after all.
