Tomas Soucek suggested that West Ham should be looking to copy Tottenham’s blueprint for success against Manchester City today, when speaking exclusively to the club’s official website.
The Hammers head to the Etihad to take on the defending Premier League champions today. And nobody is giving them much of a chance.
West Ham have lost their last seven Premier League meetings with City and have only won once in the league at the Etihad.
David Moyes’s men are in real trouble. They currently sit in 18th spot in the Premier League table, and are one point adrift of safety. Things aren’t going to get any easier either. After today’s trip to Manchester City, the Hammers face Liverpool away, a resurgent Southampton side at home, Arsenal away, Wolves at home, Tottenham away and then Chelsea at home.
So getting any kind of result at the Etihad today could be huge.
Soucek told WHUFC.com how West Ham should take inspiration from the way in which Tottenham played against Pep Guardiola’s side last weekend:
“I watched the match (Spurs vs City). The truth is Man City were very unlucky against Tottenham, but we can take advantage if one [opportunity] arises. Man City had many chances to score but Tottenham took advantage of the moments when they made counter-attacks. We could do something similar. It will be important not to miss any possible chances. We shall rely on our defenders and compactness of our team. This could lead to our success.”
If West Ham are to have any chance today, every player to a man will have to be on their very best form. Moyes’s side need to be compact defensively, but they must also offer a threat going forward, because after all, that’s how you get at City.
Guardiola’s men are fragile at the back, especially on the left hand side, and if the Hammers can target that specific area, then who knows? They might just surprise a few people today.
