Liverpool legend Phil Thompson responded to West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady’s radical suggestion to cancel the Premier League season, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports today.
The Hammers are currently in real relegation trouble. David Moyes’s men are sitting in 16th spot in the Premier League table.
And Brady suggested that the Premier League season should be rendered null and void, when writing her weekly column for the Sun:
“Sorry Liverpool but the Premier League has to be declared null and void if players can’t play again. The thought that everyone will be in and out of isolation and fit to play on April 4 seems so unlikely. So what if the league cannot be finished? The only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void. A huge blow to Liverpool who might be robbed of their first title in 30 years. This will be discussed between the PL and the clubs next week at an emergency meeting.”
It is no surprise that the West Ham vice-chairman has made that suggestion, considering the east London outfit’s current plight.
And Thompson told Sky Sports how unfair that drastic proposal would be, especially on teams like Liverpool and Leicester City:
“There’s still ramifications even if you do that. What do you do with the teams in the Champions League positions? Because Leicester City are quite healthily in third, they’d be extremely worried. There are still going to be problems. It won’t just ended with it being null and void. It’s an extremely serious and unprecedented situation. But it’s not like Liverpool are two points clear, they’re 25 points clear and we’re three-quarters of the way through the season.”
Surely common sense will prevail. The only fair way to tackle the current situation is to just wait until it is deemed safe enough to start playing football again…whenever that may be. And then start from where we left off.
Brady has quite simply put West Ham’s name through the mud once again. She really doesn’t do the club any favours with these columns in the Sun.
And in truth, she would be better off saying nothing whilst the coronavirus continues to disrupt the Premier League.
