Seriously, what has ‘brilliant’ Flynn Downes got to do to get a start for West Ham United under David Moyes?
The 23-year-old joined the Hammers from Swansea City for around £14 million in the summer transfer window (Wales Online).
Unfortunately for Downes though, he has been unable to establish himself as a first-team regular at the London Stadium…through no fault of his own though, I might add.
Described as a ‘brilliant’ player by The 72, Downes has impressed every time he’s pulled on a West Ham shirt.

Weirdly though, Moyes has given Downes only three Premier League starts. Even stranger, during all three of those games, Moyes decided to utilise Downes as the more advanced central midfielder.
Baffling to say the least. And now the ex-Swansea ace can’t get another start for love nor money.
What has Flynn Downes got to do to start for West Ham
The 23-year-old is streets ahead of Tomas Soucek in every single department, apart from in the air.
Downes is an archetypal defensive midfielder. He excels when breaking up the opposition’s play and moving the ball on to his more technically gifted teammates.
He is tenacious, aggressive and has a really impressive engine on him. The midfield his perfectly built for the robust nature of the Premier League, but he’s far from a one-trick physical pony.

Downes is a very good passer of the football and possesses impressive technical ability.
The Brentwood-born ace has energy in abundance and has all the attributes that West Ham are currently lacking in the middle of the park.
However, Moyes continues to ignore the midfielder as a regular starting option for him. It really is mind-boggling decision making from the Scot.
I would love to ask Moyes the question: What has Flynn Downes got to do to start for West Ham? Because as things stand, the midfielder must be thinking the same thing.
