Rio Ferdinand delivers verdict on West Ham’s survivals hopes

Rio Ferdinand spoke to talkSPORT at the launch of BT Sport’s 4-3-3 strategy, and insisted that David Moyes has a lot of hard work to do, if he is to keep West Ham in the Premier League this season.

The Hammers currently sit in 18th spot in the Premier League table and are one point adrift of safety.

Things are set to get a whole lot worse too.

In their next seven games, West Ham face trips to Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham. They also have home games against Southampton, Wolves and Chelsea during that period.

Things are looking very bleak indeed for the Hammers.

It is so frustrating for West Ham fans because this squad of players should be nowhere near the bottom three. But the bottom line is that they are. And they now need to show an entirely different set of qualities, if they are to begin an ascent up the table.

Ferdinand, who began his career with the Hammers, spoke to talkSPORT, and emphasised just how serious the current situation is that Moyes’s side find themselves in:

“They’ve got to find some fight from somewhere. At the end of the day no-one has a divine right to be in the Premier League. They’ve got good people in the building, especially personnel like Mark Noble. He knows his way around West Ham, and knows what it means to the local people there. David Moyes has got a huge job on his hands. He’s got to galvanise that squad now. West Ham is the team I grew up up in, so obviously I want to see them do well. They’ve got to produce some performances, get a bit of momentum going and add some consistency in terms of their results now.”

Ferdinand is spot on. But the worry for West Ham fans is that there has been no evidence of enough quality and fighting spirit in recent games to suggest that the team will avoid drop this season.

Who knows? The Hammers could still easily avoid the relegation if they find some form. After all, they did complete the great escape back in 2007 when they looked doomed with 10 games or so still to play.

The current West Ham players need to draw inspiration from that team 13 years ago. Survival is still possible. But unfortunately, it looks more and more unlikely with every week that passes.
