According to a report from the Evening Standard, West Ham attacker Andriy Yarmolenko has his work cut-out if he is to force his way back into David Moyes’s side this season.
The 30-year-old joined the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2018, for a fee believed to be worth £17.5 million, according to the Evening Standard.
He has struggled to impress at the London Stadium, however.
Yarmolenko has played 25 games in all competitions for West Ham, racking up just five goals and only two assists (Transfermarkt).
The 86-capped Ukraine international arrived in England with a big reputation. But he quite simply hasn’t delivered thus far.
It’s a strange one, because the Hammers could really do with a fully fit and firing Yarmolenko at the moment.
Injuries have wreaked havoc on his West Ham career, but he is inching ever closer to a return to action, and could be available for the Hammers’ clash with Liverpool on February 24th, according to the Evening Standard.
The Evening Standard suggest that the 30-year-old faces a real fight to force his way back into Moyes’s side, however.
Football Insider also claimed two days ago that the Hammers will try to sell the injury-prone attacker in the summer.
With Jarrod Bowen now at the club, and Michail Antonio fully fit again, it is hard to see where the Ukrainian fits in.
Perhaps Moyes could play Yarmolenko through the middle and convert him into an old-fashioned number nine? If Sebastien Haller continues to struggle that could very well be an option for West Ham.
One thing’s for certain, however, the former Dortmund man’s future in east London is looking bleak.
