According to a report from the Daily Star, West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini will not be given any transfer funds in January.
The Hammers have been quite simply awful recently. They have lost four and drawn two of their last six league games. And were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League One side Oxford United six weeks ago.
Looking at the West Ham squad, it could be argued that Pellegrini needs to strengthen in at least four positions – goalkeeper, centre-back, centre midfield and centre-forward.
No funds in January?
The Chilean’s recruitment in the summer was perhaps not as good as first thought. It is clear to see that the Hammers need much more investment, if they are to challenge for the top six anytime soon.
Unfortunately for Pellegrini, however, that won’t be happening in January, according to the Daily Star.
The British tabloid claims that the board are willing to give the former Manchester City boss a chance to turn things around. But they are not willing to back him financially in January.
And this could be a huge problem for West Ham. If the Hammers fail to invest, the best they can hope for this season is a top 10 finish.
The London Stadium faithful will be extremely annoyed with the club’s owners, if the report regarding January spending is indeed true.
David Sullivan and David Gold are far from popular figures amongst the club’s fans as it is. And should they fail to provide Pellegrini with funds in January, it would prove just how little ambition they actually have as owners.
West Ham could be set to face yet another season of mediocrity. And whilst Pellegrini is not immune from criticism, it’s clear where the blame lies – the board.
