According to a report from Claret and Hugh, Winston Reid is set to return to action on October 8th when West Ham’s under-23 side square off against Cheltenham Town.

The New Zealand international has endured a torrid time with injuries over the past few years. He has not played a senior game for the Hammers since March 2018.

Reid, 31, was always an extremely dependable member of the West Ham squad. He was a natural leader, and his pace and organisational skills at the back played a key role in any success that the east London outfit had.

The Hammers have really missed the Kiwi over the past 18 months or so. And there will be real concerns that he might never return to the player that he once was, having missed so much football.

He will, of course, have to be eased back into action by Manuel Pellegrini.

And Claret and Hugh claims that Reid, who earns £70,000 per week according to Spotrac, will make his return to action on October 8th for the Development Squad’s clash against Cheltenham Town in the Leasing Trophy.

The centre-back could make a huge difference for the Hammers this season if he can return to somewhere near his best.

Expectations need to be realistic, however. He hasn’t played in such a long time. Patience will be a must, if he is to find his feet again in the most intense league in Europe.

It will be a big boost for Pellegrini to have him back involved with the first-team squad nonetheless.
