According to a report from Football.London, West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini went against the board’s wishes by pushing for a deal to sign Jack Wilshere on a three-year contract in the summer of 2018.
The 27-year-old joined the Hammers on a free transfer 16 months ago after his contract had expired with Arsenal.
He has really struggled to establish himself at the London Stadium, however.
Wilshere has played just 16 games for West Ham. And he has racked up one goal and one assist in those outings.
The 34-capped England international’s injury problems continue to plague him.
And Football.London claims that the Hammers board foresaw those problems. They suggest that they were only prepared to offer Wilshere a one-year deal. But Pellegrini was adamant that the midfielder be offered a three-year contract.
Wilshere has just 18 months remaining on his current deal with West Ham.
And he has a lot of work to do, if he is to be offered a new contract with the club.
The former Arsenal man needs to find some consistency, and avoid any kind of injury between now and the end of the season.
On his day, Wilshere is a truly top class player. We just haven’t seen enough of him since he arrived in east London.
And time is running out for him to put things right.
