Report claims West Ham are paying massive chunk of Winston Reid’s salary during MLS loan stint

According to a report from Football.London, West Ham are still paying 85% of Winston Reid’s £70,000 per week wages, despite the fact that he is on loan with MLS side Sporting Kansas City until the end of the season.

Let’s just presume that Reid’s Kansas side go all the way in the MLS this season. That would mean that he won’t return back to the Hammers until October.

If that does turn out to be the case, West Ham will be paying £59,500 per week for Reid for six months – a total of a staggering £1,547,000.

The 31-year-old hasn’t played a senior game for the Hammers since March 2018. And the east London outfit’s owners will be hoping that Reid can return to his best physically whilst out in America.

He would then return to the London Stadium with his value having gone up. On the flip-side, if West Ham want to keep him, he could still be an asset for them.

Much will depend on how the Kiwi performs in the MLS.

David Moyes will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the 31-year-old’s progress. West Ham are far from strong in central defence, and a fully fit Reid returning might just be welcomed by the Scot in five or six months time.
