Whisper it quietly, but West Ham United are now favourites to avoid relegation ahead of Tottenham.

They now lead Spurs by two points in the Premier League table after a remarkable turnaround in form since West Ham beat their north London rivals in mid-January.

It’s a cliche of course, but West Ham have six cup finals remaining, so here’s a prediction on what could lie ahead.

Crystal Palace vs West Ham – 1 point

Crystal Palace are no pushovers despite a difficult season for the FA Cup holders, as was proved in their comeback win over Newcastle only a few days after thrashing Fiorentina in the Conference League.

Still, it’s a game that West Ham should be getting something from, given the desperation of their situation. Palace, meanwhile, have won only four home games all season.

They have, however, been something of a bogey team for the Irons over the years – so a draw does not feel out of the question.

West Ham vs Everton – 0 points

It does feel somewhat strange not to back West Ham to get anything at home, but David Moyes and his Everton team are on something of a Champions League charge right now.

The Toffees have won seven games on the road this season and have a return to European football in their sights.

Some may disagree, but it’s difficult to see how West Ham get anything from the game.

Brentford vs West Ham – 1 point

High-flying Brentford have been impressive all season and the Gtech Community Stadium – despite its relatively welcoming name – is a difficult place to go.

As good as the Bees have been, however, they are not to be trusted right now. Though things can change between now and then, they’ve stopped winning and have drawn their last four games.

As such, a positive point in west London does feel reasonably likely.

West Ham vs Arsenal – 1 point

Yes, you read that correctly.

This may come back to make the writer look incredibly stupid, but isn’t that what predictions are all about?

Arsenal are wobbling and West Ham have previous when it comes to derailing their title bids.

There’s an obvious caveat that should be applied here. If the Gunners beat Manchester City in their huge clash on Sunday, they’ll be back on track and could duly approach this game in a very different manner.

Newcastle United vs West Ham – 3 points

Another bullish claim here but anyone who has watched Newcastle this season will know that they are no longer the force of old.

Eddie Howe’s side will almost certainly have nothing to play by the time this game rolls around and the mood on Tyneside is starting to turn toxic.

If there is ever going to be a good time to go to St James’ needing something, towards the end of a miserable campaign for the Magpies is it.

West Ham vs Leeds – 3 points

The final game of the season does threaten to be a very nervous affair, depending on how the next few fixtures go.

Frankly, however, if West Ham cannot beat Leeds at home when they may desperately need to – then they deserve whatever fate awaits them.

Little about West Ham’s recent revival suggests they cannot beat Leeds at home. The Whites won at the London Stadium in the FA Cup quarter-final, but that was against a reasonably rotated Hammers side by the finest of margins.

Total: 9 more points, which would give West Ham 41 points. That should be enough to keep them in the Premier League this season.
