West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini spoke to reporters today, and seemed to hint that he is prepared to stick with Roberto for Saturday’s clash with Tottenham, as quoted by Football.London.
The 33-year-old joined the Hammers on a free transfer in the summer. He was originally supposed to be a back-up for Lukasz Fabianski. The Spaniard has been used regularly since the end of September, however, after the Pole suffered a hip injury.
And Roberto has been absolutely shocking. His woeful displays have cost West Ham dearly.
But Pellegrini continues to stick with the calamitous stopper.
There have been calls for third-choice ‘keeper David Martin to get the nod against Spurs on Saturday.
When speaking to reporters, however, the Chilean seemed to hint that he will retain his faith in Roberto, as quoted by Football.London:
“Every player when they are in a bad moment needs the confidence of us behind them. Roberto has a lot of experience in a lot of countries. He knows it’s not his best performance in the last game, but I think that all of us must be behind him.”
If Roberto does play and he puts in a shaky display once again, Pellegrini will have no excuse.
The warnings signs are there for him to see clear as day.
And there really isn’t any better time to bring David Martin into the fray than right now.
