Paul Merson suggested that West Ham veteran Robert Snodgrass has given David Moyes somewhat of a headache after his performance against Brighton today, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme today (Saturday February 1st, 17:22).
The Hammers threw away two points against the Seagulls, having led 3-1 after 57 minutes. And the result could end up being the one that sends them down.
Moyes’s side looked so comfortable inside the first 60 minutes, but they just fell apart in the final third of the contest.
One positive for West Ham was Robert Snodgrass’s display. The experienced Scot scored twice, and assisted Issa Diop’s opener.
And Merson suggested that the 32-year-old has now given Moyes a real headache ahead of the next few games, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme today (Saturday February 1st, 17:22):
“I thought he was the one who was going to make way for Bowen, because I’m sure Antonio is definitely going to play. For me, all of a sudden, he has given the manager a headache. You know, paying for Bowen, he will have to play.”
Snodgrass joined West Ham from Hull City for £10.2 million in January 2017 (BBC). His is often found wanting from a quality perspective, but his work-rate and commitment can never be called into question.
It may sound harsh on the Scot, but he must be the player who is sacrificed for Bowen when the £22 million new signing comes into the side. Michail Antonio is undroppable, and despite Snodgrass’s work ethic, he has to be the man to make way.
The Hammers are in a real relegation dog-fight, however. And Moyes, being the pragmatic coach that he is, might see the former Hull and Leeds man as vital to his plans for the rest of the season.
It’s Manchester City away up next for West Ham. Onwards an upwards. Gulp.
