Paul Merson suggested that he sympathises with West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, when writing his column for Sky Sports, and admitted that it is a horrible position for the Chilean to be in.
The 66-year-old is under heavy pressure, having overseen a run of just one win in 10 Premier League games.
The Hammers are bang in trouble. They currently sit in 16th spot in the Premier League table, just one point clear of the drop zone.
West Ham fans are furious with Pellegrini for his stubbornness and refusal to change systems.
It is clear to see that Sebastien Haller needs support up top, but the Chilean continues to play with a 4-5-1. Why can he not see this? It really is baffling.
Merson offered words of support for the former Manchester City boss, however, when writing his column for Sky Sports, suggesting that he has sympathy for the South American:
“West Ham go to Southampton next time out and there’s no doubt about it, Manuel Pellegrini is under pressure. Having said that, he was under pressure when he went to Chelsea and they won quite comfortably. For large parts of the Monday Night Football, Pellegrini would have been happy, West Ham went ahead and looked like they would at least get a draw. They looked like they were going to get a second goal, but Arsenal turned things around. Managers lose confidence, it’s horrible. I’ve been there at a lower standard and can sympathise with him, it’s horrible.”
If West Ham lose at Southampton, Pellegrini will surely be relieved of his duties.
The time seems right to move the Chilean on. His ideas are stale and dated. And he clearly isn’t the man to take the Hammers to the next level.
