Paul Merson delivered his verdict on Jarrod Bowen’s display for West Ham against Southampton today, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme today (Saturday February 29th, 17:15).
The 23-year-old joined the Hammers from Hull City on transfer deadline day in January for around £22 million (The Guardian).
Bowen, who earns £50,000 per week according to Hull Live, had to wait until today before making his first start for West Ham, however. And he really impressed.
The former Hull man didn’t stop working, and his attacking intent and drive in the final third offered the Hammers something entirely different. His neat finish that gave his side the lead against the Saints was quite simply exceptional.
He racked up four shots on goal, three dribbles and two crosses today (Football Critic).
And during his appearance on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme, Merson responded when asked what he thought of Bowen’s performance for West Ham against the Saints today:
“Obviously he scored his goal which was a great finish. Sometimes he was a bit loose with his play. Sometimes he should have got his head up and passed, he was having shots instead of passing. But his energy…when he lost the ball he chased back. He left everything on the pitch, got a standing ovation, and that’s all West Ham fans ask.”
Bowen must start every game for West Ham between now and the end of the season. He has already proven that he has the ability to succeed during his time with Hull. And since moving to east London, it looks like he has what it takes to make a difference in the Premier League as well.
£22 million for the 23-year-old could end up looking like an absolute steal for West Ham.
