Opinion – David Sullivan’s transfer funds masterstroke means West Ham fans are panicking over nothing

West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan is playing things very smart indeed as far as I’m concerned.

Sure, David Sullivan has made his fare share of mistakes during his West Ham tenure

One of his biggest mistakes was appointing Julen Lopetegui and hanging on to him for too long.

Let’s not forget the good things he’s done though.

The 76-year-old has backed his managers to the hilt in the transfer market over the past few years or so, David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui especially.

Some fans may question Sullivan’s financial acumen, but here’s the thing, he is a hugely successful businessman who is worth over one billion pounds!

He must know what he’s doing when it comes to financial decisions and manoeuvres right?

That’s why I think the Hammers fans are panicking over nothing. Sullivan is clearly playing a very cunning game…

The Hammers co-owner knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s playing the long game and so many Hammers fans are missing the point.

West Ham fans have missed David Sullivan masterstroke

Word has been going around that the Hammers need to sell in order to buy in the summer transfer window.

And since that news emerged, I have heard numerous fans relentlessly complain about the situation, and unforgivingly criticise Sullivan.

There’s a bigger picture here though.

Would you prefer it if he came out and exclaimed to the world that West Ham have an unlimited budget this summer?

What do you think that would do to our chances of picking up players for reasonable fees? The answer is obvious – we would get held to ransom time and time again by selling clubs.

I believe that Sullivan has performed a real masterstroke by leaking to all of his trusted confidants that money is scarce ahead of the summer transfer window.

That way, clubs we are trying to buy from in the summer will not be under the impression that we’re flush with cash.

I will caveat all of that by saying you actually never know what West Ham supremo David Sullivan is really thinking.

He may well be telling it how it is, and there is actually no money to spend this summer. I just can’t see that being the case though.

It’s my opinion that he’s playing the long game. I don’t want him telling everyone how much money we have to spend.

Hopefully I’m proven right, and Sullivan backs Potter to the hilt when the summer transfer window swings open.
