West Ham United’s task on Deadline Day is simple.
Unless West Ham United improve their backline, they are simply not going to stay up this season.
Indeed, West Ham have the worst defensive record in Europe’s major five leagues and, barring a miracle, they will be relegated to the Championship. It, frankly, is as simple as that.
Hammers News understands that West Ham do plan to make signings on Deadline Day.
Pretend YOU call the shots – who are you signing on Deadline Day?! 🤑
Feel free to name one REALISTIC target and one DREAM addition 😂
Whether that is possible, however, remains to be seen. As ever, the Hammers do not make it easy for themselves.
With that in mind, there is one simple message that Nuno Espirito Santo should be sending to majority shareholder David Sullivan ahead of Deadline Day.
Nuno must be desperate for David Sullivan to bring a new defender to West Ham
Club legend Tony Cottee has urged West Ham to sign a new central defender, and he is no doubt echoing so many voices among the club’s fanbase.
The fact that Jean-Clair Todibo has been suspended for the next three games at least further complicates matters.
West Ham’s defence wasn’t great before that and it’s even weaker now.

Indeed, not many Irons fans will be delighted with the idea that Max Kilman will almost certainly partner Konstantinos Mavropanos in central defence unless a new signing is made.
West Ham’s chances of avoiding relegation look remote at best right now. Unless a new centre-back comes in, it’s almost impossible to see how that changes.
How on earth do we REPLACE Jean-Clair Todibo?! 🤔
If you could tell Nuno what to do, what would you say?! 🗣️
West Ham could make late loan signing in January transfer window
Hammers News also understands that the prospect of a late loan or two cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Earlier this month, West Ham cut Igor Julio’s loan spell short, and the defender has now returned to Brighton.
As such, the club now have two domestic loan spots available in their squad.
It’s all leading up to a dramatic end to the January transfer window, although fans will surely have hoped that all of West Ham’s business would be wrapped up by now, given the position the team are in.
