West Ham need to strengthen several positions this summer to push further up the table and right-back is no exception.

Ryan Fredericks and Pablo Zabaleta have shared the right-back duties this season but the Hammers need one new face in that position to push on.

Ben Johnson could be promoted but he might need another year of development, while Sam Byram’s career at West Ham looks to be coming to an end.

Here are three English right-backs who West Ham should be targeting this summer.

Max Aarons

Norwich City look to be heading to the Premier League and Max Aarons has been a key part of their success.

The 19-year-old only made his senior debut this season but already has 39 games, three goals and six assists to his name.

It is no surprise to see the likes of Tottenham Hotspur keen on the England under-19 starlet (The Daily Mail), who already looks Premier League quality.

West Ham have been linked with £15m-rated Nathaniel Clyne this month (Goal) and he would be a good signing for a lower price.

The 14-cap England international is surplus to requirements at Liverpool but he has impressed since joining Bournemouth on loan.

Given his experience and proven Premier League quality, the 28-year-old could be a solid upgrade on Zabaleta this summer.

Reece James

It is only Reece James’ first season in senior football but the Chelsea loanee is excelling at relegation-threatened Championship side Wigan Athletic.

The 19-year-old has operated as a right-back or in midfield, racking up 43 appearances with three goals and three assists.

But breaking into the Chelsea team will be difficult and West Ham could offer the England under-20 wonder-kid a clear path to first-team Premier League football.
