Mark Noble backed West Ham for top four finish in September

West Ham are in all sorts of trouble at the moment.

The Hammers have won just once in their last nine Premier League games, and they currently sit precariously in 16th position in the table, just one point clear of the drop zone.

They actually began their 2019/20 campaign in fine fashion. Manuel Pellegrini’s side took 11 points from their first six games, and at one point climbed as high as third in the Premier League table.

And at the time, Hammers skipper Mark Noble back West Ham to finish inside the top four, when writing his regular column for the Evening Standard:

“There’s a feeling that the chance exists for a change and at least one different club to break into the top six this season. I would even go one step further. I believe there is an opportunity for someone different to actually make it into the top four! Clubs like Leicester, Everton and ourselves are saying: ‘Do you know what? I think we have a chance this season.’ I really believe that is the case and if I didn’t, I would not be doing my job properly as West Ham captain. If you can go on a roll and keep winning, then there is no reason why even third or fourth place are out of reach.”

Obviously Noble was trying to be positive at the time. And there is nothing wrong with that.

But West Ham’s displays over the past few months have shown where they are really at as a football club.

The Hammers are miles behind teams like Leicester and Wolves, let alone the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.

If West Ham are to challenge for the top four at some point in the future, they need to totally overhaul their current setup.

The owners need to change. The training facilities need to be improved. They need a new manager with fresh ideas and innovative philosophies.

And they need to recruit young, hungry and dynamic players.

Sadly, however, everything about West Ham reeks of mediocrity at the moment.
