West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini spoke to reporters after yesterday’s defeat to Tottenham, and responded when asked about the home fans booing his team off the pitch, as quoted by the club’s official website.
The Hammers were absolutely dreadful against Spurs.
They never really got going, and they were taught a lesson by their London rivals. In fact, West Ham should have really been beaten by a much more comfortable margin than the end result of 3-2.
And the Hammers fans let the players know about it at full-time.
The West Ham players were booed off the pitch. And Pellegrini was asked by reporters after the game about what he thought of the backlash from the fans, as quoted by WHUFC.com:
“Of course, supporters want results and they’ve always been behind us. This stadium has always been full and I said when I arrived here we wanted to help the team grow one step more and we started to work. Now, when things are bad and we are not winning then of course they must have that reaction because there are too many games at home that we have not won.”
The West Ham players have a responsibility to their fans and the manager to improve over the next few weeks.
They will have their work cut-out, however, with games against Chelsea, Wolves and Arsenal to come.
Pellegrini’s men must at least show they are up for the fight. There is nothing West Ham fans hate more than seeing a lack of effort from their players.
And Pellegrini’s future could depend on how his players respond in the next three games.
