West Ham safely navigated a tricky Carabao Cup tie against Newport County night, and Manuel Pellegrini reserved special praise for three players.
The Hammers won 2-0 with goals coming from Jack Wilshere and Pablo Fornals.
There were many positives for West Ham, but the main thing is that we are in the draw for the next round.
And Pellegrini singled out three Hammers players for praise after the game, as quoted by the club’s official website:
“Jack, I think that he played very well, scoring a goal and dominating the midfield area. This is what we expect from him because he is an experienced player and he knows how to do it. Also, with Carlos Sanchez, I think that he also played a very good game, and Felipe Anderson was also a positive for us.”
Wilshere would have been delighted to open his account for West Ham. He has received criticism during the first few weeks of the season, so yesterday’s goal and performance was much needed.
Sanchez, meanwhile, has been a much-maligned figure since moving to the Hammers last summer, so his fine display last night will also be a huge boost for his confidence.
West Ham seem to be in a good place at the moment.
And a win at home to Norwich on Saturday would be the icing on the cake to what has been a very solid start to the Hammers’ 2019/20 campaign.
