West Ham were humiliated in the Carabao Cup last night, losing 4-0 to League One side Oxford United.
The Hammers headed into the game on the back of a fine run of form that had seen them win three and draw one of their last four outings.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men had also kept four consecutive clean sheets.
West Ham’s performance against Oxford, however, was quite simply shocking, and they deserved nothing less than an absolute hammering.
Pellegrini made nine changes form the side that beat Manchester United on Sunday. Pablo Zabaleta came in for Ryan Fredericks and Angelo Ogbonna was replaced by Fabian Balbuena.
And the Hammers looked totally disjointed.
Oxford were fully deserving of their win. And Pellegrini had a message for West Ham fans after the game, as quoted by Football.London:
“Keep supporting and believing in what we are doing. This happened against Wimbledon, I cannot find a reason why we lost 4-0.”
West Ham will have to put last night’s defeat behind them as soon as possible. They face Bournemouth away on Saturday. And a victory over the Cherries would be the ideal way to banish the memories of their Carabao Cup exit.
