West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini spoke to reporters yesterday, and suggested that he would not be manager of the Hammers if his target was to finish between 13th and 15th position in the table.
The Chilean took over as West Ham manager in the summer of 2018. The east London outfit began the 2018/19 campaign in poor form, but finished the season with three wins in a row and ended up in 10th position.
And despite improving the quality of football initially, things haven’t worked out as planned.
West Ham were expected to push for a top six finish this season after bringing in the likes of Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals.
They currently sit in 17th spot, however. And are just three points clear of the drop zone.
Pellegrini spoke to reporters and responded when asked what his ambition is with the current West Ham team, as quoted by the Telegraph:
“I felt from the first day I arrived here to the last day I always felt the fans behind me but worried about results. I didn’t come here for the money, or not to be relegated. If my work here is just to be 12th, 14th or 15th in the Premier League, then I wouldn’t be the manager.”
Relegation scrap is just not good enough…
Pellegrini is sort of shooting himself in the foot with these comments, considering the fact that the Hammers are currently in 17th position.
Next up for West Ham is back-to-back away games against Chelsea and Wolves respectively. And if they don’t get any points from those outings, Pellegrini could be sent packing.
The east London outfit should be nowhere near the bottom of the table, and the Chilean must be held accountable for that.
